Meet your 2011 Chicago Bulls Bench Mob (late 16th century French Bourgeoisie nobles are metaphorically pooping themselves):
- Gibson: The second of two first-round picks in 2009, he started 70 games as a rookie and accepted the bench role this season with Boozer’s arrival. The 6-9 forward is an excellent defender and guarded LeBron James at various times in Game 1. He has gained an increased role lately.
- Korver: A starter for two years with the Philadelphia 76ers (100 games total), he is the principal three-point shooting threat. The free agent acquisition scored in double figures 28 times in the regular season. He had two dreadful shooting games in the Atlanta Hawks series but is still hitting 47.5% of his shots from three-point range in the playoffs.
- Asik: Acquired by the Bulls in a 2008 draft-night trade, the 7-foot NBA rookie played parts of five seasons of pro ball in Turkey and was a member of the silver medal-winning Turkish team at last summer’s world championships. His minutes have been increasing. “The defense means everything,” he said.
- Brewer: A full-time starter with the Utah Jazz for 21/2 seasons, he is the first guard off the bench, usually spelling Keith Bogans. The free agent acquisition averaged 6.2 points and 22 minutes in the regular season.
- Watson: A part-time starter (32 games over his final two seasons) with the Golden State Warriors, he often spells Rose. In his lone start, for an injured Rose, he scored 33 points Nov. 26 against the Denver Nuggets.
- Kurt Thomas: He has played little, with Asik cutting into his time. But he was a major contributor, starting 37 games when Noah and Boozer were hurt.
No mention of Brian Scalabrine?! He’s on his way to replacing Jack Haley as the greatest 12th man in the history of the game. For Shame USA Today, for shame!
Or maybe he doesn’t even count as their 12th man now, since he hasn’t dressed in a while…Oh well Scals we love you.
